His camera gear on a backpacking trip weighs almost as much as everything else he brings.  It's now the season (Sept, Oct) when needles on the larches turn to gold and Gil will again backpack into the central Washington's Pasayten Wilderness, to capture their beauty. Gil and wife Lindsay live in Brier.

Gray Pine or Pinus sabiniana
Gray Pine or Pinus sabiniana
Known as the tree that cast no shade, Gray Pine encircles the central valley of California in the foothills. A tall tree often with a forked trunk to 50'. Excellent old specimens thrive in the PNW. Moderate growing in youth, it picks up steam as it ages. Full sun and very well drained soil. No water when established. The long fine gray needles allow the sun to penetrate right through the canopy casting (almost) no shade. The giant cones produced by this tree are similar to those at the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden.

Dugout Canoe
Dugout Canoe

This beautiful fine art painting, oil on recycled wood, 20.5" x 24.5" is by local artist Steve Jensen.

Steve has been a working artist for over 40 years. His current body of work, "The Ice is Melting, Our Ship is Sinking," are boats that symbolize a voyage or journey. Perhaps it is the voyage to the other side or the journey to the unknown.

Steve comes from a long tradition of Norwegian fisherman and boat builders. He grew up on and around his father's and grandfather's fishing boats in the Ballard shipyard. Steve feels if he had inherited their boats, it would be easier to make a living as an artist than a fisherman, a sad reflection on our marine environment.

We are all in the same boat. Humanity needs to connect globally to address climate change, or we will become the "endangered species."

From 2015 to 2020, Steve has solo exhibited at the "SAM" gallery at the Seattle Art Museum, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, Foss Maritime Museum in Tacoma, WA, the Museum of Northwest Art in LaConner, WA, Vashon Center for the Arts, Northwind Arts Center in Port Townshend, WA and Schack Art Center in Everett, WA.

His works have also been featured by Channel 9, "Art as Voyage: Steve Jensen's Nordic Heritage" PBS News Hour by Stephen Hegg.
